Recapping The Week - DC Pasta, Noodlecat, Bloggers, Wine & Lexus

I've found that recently my weeks are crazy and filled with friends, events and fun and my weekends have been relaxing and unwinding. This week was the perfect example in that Monday through Thursday were filled with activities and Friday-Sunday I had nothing planned. Nothing. I checked. With the Husband. At least three times. I love being at home. Cooking, snuggling with a glass of wine, just doing whatever. Not to say I don't love getting out. There are so many events going on constantly that you just have to make sure that you don't overcommit yourself. Which is easy to do in the CLE.

Monday started out with my mother and her husband being in town. We dined at Lago in Tremont where I ordered the (amazing) beef carpaccio all-for-myself. I would have shared, but they weren't interested. I ended up with the duck breast over spring pea risotto (which was the special) and afterward we walked over to Dante for dessert at the bar. If you haven't had dessert there, Get There Now. I'm the girl who always eats too much and has no room left for dessert, but I save room when I'm here. We ordered the roasted pumpkin cheesecake with candied pecans and bourbon, toasted coconut creme caramel and the ice cream/sorbet tasting. There are no words.

Since Dante's new DC Pasta Co had opened in Strongsville just a few days prior, the Husband, Mother in Law and I met for lunch to check it out. DC pasta is a collaboration between Dante Boccuzzi and Carmella del Busso offering freshly made, affordable pasta where you can bring the whole family. The mushroom appetizer was so wonderful I'm craving it again. The eggplant pasta we felt could use a bit more eggplant, but other than that all the pastas were fantastic. I expected the pumpkin tortellini to be a bit sweet, but it wasn't. It was light and savory and the Husband even liked it (and he's not a pumpkin fan). The gorgonzola dish is amazingly rich and flavorful with a great crunch from the walnuts and we could barely finish it between the 3 of us. Which, oddly, won't stop me from ordering it again. I'm convinced no one could finish the entree size of this it's so filling.

I'm excited to be heading here again on Tuesday for dinner to try even more of the menu and check out the great wine list.

Tuesday night was the monthly meetup of the Ohio Blogging Association. This month we met up at Wine & Design in Tremont for a little, you guessed it, wine. If you are a blogger or blog lover, I highly recommend you come to an event. We are a fun bunch if I do say so myself! Finally getting to meet Nadine, wine we tasted, Kristian made everyone's day bringing Pazcki, Crystal & I,
Miss WineOH paired our wines with nibbles, Wine & Design coziness.

Wednesday brought our GNO at the Cat (Noodlecat) and if you haven't been there read this. Sarah, Crystal, her friend Elizabeth and my friend Michelle spent a few hours slurping and digging in to buns, cocktails and desserts.

Thursday I headed with the Husband to the Lexus Style Show at Playhouse Square. Fashion and cars collided in a beautiful space atop the stage at the State Theater. On our way home we stopped at Happy Dog for some post-Playhouse dogs.

So that's the week. Which is why I'm wrapping it up with a cozy, winter weekend in yoga pants and a hot beverage. I'm not leaving the house til Monday. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Lexus Style Show - Playhouse Square

Last night local Lexus dealers put on their annual Lexus Style Show to unveil the redesigned 2013 Lexus GS. 'The beauty of Lexus meets the beauty of fashion' was the theme of the evening where cars and fashion collided on the stage of the State Theater. This was a free event with invitations being sent out to Lexus customers and a limited number of public tickets. By the time I realized I was able to attend, all the tickets were sold out and I thankfully scored 2 from a drawing by Playhouse Square. (thanks!)

The main lobby of the theater was swarming with people and Lexus spared no expense with complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. At 7:30 we moved into the theater and the show began featuring fashions from Beachwood Place.

When the fashion show was complete it was time to unveil the 2013 Lexus GS. The crowd mingled while dessert was served, cocktails were refreshed and everyone got up close and personal with the cars.

I'm obviously very impressed with the spacious, gorgeous interior.

It was a great evening of fashion, fun and people watching. If only shopping for a new car was always this easy and glamorous! Thanks to Lexus and Playhouse Square for a wonderful event.

Birchbox February 2012 & Bonus Vichy Box

This month I asked Birchbox subscribers on facebook and twitter if you liked checking out what everyone else was getting or if you liked to be surprised when your box came. It was pretty split right down the middle with half wanting the surprise and the other half (me included) who just couldn't wait every month and loved seeing what others were getting. I"m interested to try out the newest Kiehl's serum since I do have some hyperpigmentation on my cheek. The one that faces the car window, from sun exposure. I love most everything from the Blow line and haven't tried this conditioner yet. The perfume smelled good, but was a bit androgynous and I couldn't figure out if it was supposed to be or was just a bit too masculine for me. It is hip and spicy (just like it says on the card.)

Scenes From A Friday Night

Ahhhh, the Friday night date night.

Having season tickets to the Cavs for so many years means the husband and I get to have quite a few midweek date nights downtown, shielding yourself from the blistering wind and snow while making the trek from where we park to the Q. (The key is having a great spot halfway to stop, warm yourself up, get a libation, meet up with friends, before bundling up and walking the rest of the way.) Since it was a Friday night game and it was quite warm out for this time of year, we opted out of our usual and strolled along E4th St. I feel like I live here lately. With The Greenhouse and Noodlecat, CLE Clothing Co and Dredgers Union, I'm here at least twice a week.

You could tell something was happening last night as droves of people were packed into downtown in every bar and shop. The Heat was here. We headed to Flannery's to meet up with some friends. Packed was an understatement and I almost had a slight panic attack waiting at the bar for my drink.

Walking over to the arena, excitement filled the air. Something I haven't felt in the last 2 years. It's been rough. But last night sparked excitement and the crowd was the crowd I remember (you know, when winning came easy - or easier.)

And it was the first time I was actually there early enough to get Rocco's Tacos and Nachos! (This really being the only reason I was stoked, as I still didn't have faith in my fellow Clevelanders to behave and not act like complete idiots with you-know-who in town.)

We saw Rocco behind the counter and the husband asked if I could get my picture taken with him. I'm listening to him now as he (bless his heart) tells Rocco I have a blog. Oh My God! You DID NOT just say that. Out loud. To Rocco! I'm now beyond mortified and the husband has no idea why. But Rocco says sure and comes out and this happens.

I got scooped!

I'm oddly less mortified now (he's so incredibly sweet! and strong) and I'm ready to get my taco on.

We ordered the Spiced Chicken Tinga Tacos (baby greens, jack cheese, scallion, lime-avocado sauce, salsa fresca) and the Braised Beef Brisket Tacos (sweet teriyake glaze, jack cheese, crispy tortillas, salsa fresca). Oh, Rocco! Where have you been all these years when I've scoured the Q for a dinner that I won't regret later?

He stopped by to ask how we liked everything, but I was so busy mashing my face in taco heaven that I could barely nod.

I'm already craving more. Rocco's Tacos also serve up grilled vegetable tacos for only 366 calories, garlic buttered shrimp tacos, goat cheese nachos and sea salt nachos. See menu here.

Walking around the Q seeing everyone with their seasoned fries, chicken fingers and orange nacho sauce made me slightly nauseous after my delectable dinner. I've decided that we need 3 more Rocco's Taco stands in the arena to give a run to the fried chicken finger ones.

We sat down for the first half and it was. so. painful.
Like watching your ex strut about with their new girlfriend and you are a bumbling idiot. So for the second time ever (the first was when I had the flu and fell asleep in my seat) we left before the end of the game. Halftime to be exact.

The game was much easier to watch from the bar at Chinato with a French 75 in hand.

All in all it was a good night - other than the massive loss. I spotted some cute spring fashion (cobalt skinnies) and we played the 'count the North Face jacket game' (I swear admission is half off if you wear one.)

Short Rib Pappardelle w/ Wild Mushrooms

This is one of those great, easy, tastes-like-you-spent-all-day-slaving-in-the-kitchen recipes. In other words, my favorite kind.

Short Rib Pappardelle with Wild Mushrooms

8 (bone-in) beef short ribs (4-41/2 lbs)
8-10oz pappardelle
1 lg onion -quartered
10oz wild mushrooms -sliced
2 shallots -sliced
3 cloves garlic -sliced
1T flour
2 cups Vienna Lager (or any beer you like)
1 cup red wine
2T chopped flat leaf parsley
2T olive oil
1T butter
2 sprigs fresh rosemary
salt, pepper to season & taste
1T Worcestershire

Season short ribs w/ salt, pepper. Heat 1T olive oil in large skillet (med heat) and brown in batches. Do not overcrowd pan.
Add browned meat to slow cooker.

In same pan, add onion, garlic. Saute 1 minute. Add wine to pan to deglaze, scraping up any browned bits. (1 minute)
Add wine, onion and garlic along with beer, rosemary and Worcestershire to slow cooker.
Cook on Low 5-6 hours.

Remove short ribs from slow cooker, discarding bones and set aside loosely covered with foil.
Strain and separate fat from cooking liquid.

Heat 1T olive oil and 1T butter in large saute pan (med heat). Saute mushrooms & shallots til slightly softened and browned (approx 8 mins)
Add 1T flour to pan and stir for 1 min.

Add strained/separated cooking liquid to pan stirring until slightly thickened. Add salt/pepper if needed to taste.
Add reserved meat to sauce, heat on low until warmed through.

Meanwhile, prepare pasta according to pkg directions.
Top pasta with meat and sauce, finish with parsley.

Pier W Still Makes Me Swoon

We are very lucky in the CLE to have so many amazing independent restaurants. Many of our neighborhoods are being revitalized and therefore an abundance of new and noteworthy places to try. Bring it on! There is room for everyone, as we, in the CLE, love our local foods and local chefs. So it's easy to forget those places that have been a mainstay for so long in our quest to get out and try all the new-ness going on.

Pier W has long been a favorite of mine for birthdays and anniversaries. It wasn't written up as having one of the most romantic restaurant views for nothing. Plop someone down in a romantic setting and your work isn't done. Too many places don't get this. This is what Pier W does well. Better than well. They get it. The service is spot on. The food is beyond wonderful. They manage to celebrate tradition with a modern twist.

But Pier W isn't just for special occasions. I learned that in the past year or so. They have a wonderful happy hour and a great crowd of people watching forms at the bar. Happy hour runs Sun-Fri 4-7p and Sat 4-6:30p. Here are a few of my faves (the entire HH menu is available on their site).

Lobster Bisque w/ Brandy $9 $4.75

On Mondays and Tuesdays they have a wine special where select bottles are 30% off. Yes, even on the Reserve List. I find the wine list here to be very easy to navigate. (And always ask to see the Reserve List. They have some really great bottles at very reasonable prices there.)

Last night the Husband and I celebrated our anniversary here. It was the most glorious 2 hours. We arrived for our reservation and were told a prime window seat was coming available if we'd like to wait in the lounge for a few minutes. (Of course!) We had a laugh when the hostess asked if she could check my coat and his hat. Which started an entire conversation on why more restaurants don't check your fedora. (Only him!)

5 minutes later and we were seated at the best table with the best view in all of Cleveland. It was a perfectly clear night and I was already swooning with love for our beautiful city. We ordered a bottle of wine and set on appetizers. We were told Oysters Rockefeller was a special that night and they were the best in the city. (Which prompted the Husband to ask which were the second best and then an entire conversation began on why more places don't serve Oysters Rockefeller) Can you see how this night was going to play out? If you are ever there when this is the special, order it, you will not be disappointed! They were 6 of the largest, most amazing oysters ever and I immediately forgot how I was sad that the Crab Louis wasn't on the menu anymore.

We also ordered the Lobster Tempura Sushi Roll, North Atlantic Haddock w/ lobster mashed potatoes in a lemon butter and lobster sauce and the Surf and Turf. Each bite was nearly blown away by the next. The service was spot on, as it always is, and we had great fun with our charming and witty waiter. We ate, drank and laughed our way through dinner.

Currently they are featuring their 30 days of chocolate (through Valentine's Day) and this is not to be missed. Very well priced at $8 for one trip and $12 for all you can indulge. Everything you could possibly imagine is available. From dark chocolate red wine truffles to berries and fondue, cookies, brownies, white chocolate, coconut confections, delicate buckeye cups....It was mind-boggling. The staff was so lovely as to treat us to this decadent experience for our anniversary. Thank you!

Scenes from a Honeymoon (but not a wedding)

I have been officially smitten with the Husband for 8 years today. We lived together for 5 years before getting married and it's safe to say I really, really liked him, but was unwilling to go all-the-way-to-SMITTEN without a ring. 23 would have been way too young to be getting married anyway. (at least for me)

I'm such a girly-girl that it's kind of funny how I was about my own wedding.

I didn't want a bridal shower so we had an engagement party with family and friends (guys and girls) with amazing food, wine, cocktails and a keg of Christmas Ale. (cause nothing says matrimony quite like getting everyone together and wasted on Christmas Ale and seeing who gets along then)

I have a weird thing about opening gifts in front of large groups of people so we thanked everyone and opened them quietly at home. That didn't go over well with a few of the older relatives. They came for cake and presents and got a Browns game and beer.

To this day I have never watched my wedding video. (Probably never gonna happen) And have exactly one small photo framed and on my desk (that took me 5 years to put up). All my photos are in a box and I have no interest in an album. What is wrong with me?

My memory of that day is perfect and I don't really need anything else. And I get to see the husband every day, so it's not like I'm going to forget what he looks like.

I do, however, have pictures all over the house (as large as wedding photos) of the honeymoon. We chose to do a week in London and a week In Paris. In London we stayed in a hotel but in Paris we rented a flat 2 blocks from the Opera. It was glorious and I highly recommend living like a local for at least a bit of your trip.

So there it is. Scenes from a honeymoon.

But I totally want to see your wedding pics, so when I come over, pour me a glass of wine and haul that album out!

11 Steps Of Randomness

So there's this chain-like blog post going around (I'm sure you've seen it) and I was tagged by the lovely Hungry in Cleveland.

When I read this, my social anxiety went into overdrive. Maybe no one would really do it and I could just fly under the radar. Not so. All the other awesome bloggers tagged went about it straight away. I secretly hoped for some really crazy cool random facts about me to start falling from the sky. I didn't teach myself to read and do triple axles when I was 2. I don't have a twin or a third nipple or anything nearly as much fun as that. So here goes....

1. I became a flight attendant in 2002 and had been until this past December.

2. I had my first bite of an orange a year ago after much prodding from co-workers. Fruit that has segments and membranes freak me out.

3. I'm a card-carrying member of the Clean Plate Club. If I left anything (and I mean anything) on my plate it means I didn't like it. My plate never needs to be rinsed before going into the dishwasher.

4. My hair color is natural and I'm scared of the day I'll have to color it. I'm so behind in learning all about color and what's good and how often it needs done. I have no clue.

5. I've had Cavs season tickets for the last 8 years.

6. I have to have all the dishes/pot/pans and kitchen cleaned up before I can sit down and enjoy dinner. Thankfully I'm pretty good at cleaning as I go and the Husband is an expert speed washer of last minute items as I set the food out. He, however, does not share this issue.

7. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in Cleveland that doesn't like baseball. I've been known to fall asleep at Indians games.

8. I will sing at home and in the car (my poor husband) at the top of my lungs but mouth the words to Happy Birthday. This is a favor to you since I'm completely tone-deaf. I will never karaoke no matter how drunk you get me.

9. I wanted to be a lawyer growing up but changed my mind when I read a study that said lawyers have the highest suicide rate of all the professions.

10. I'm the least athletic person you'll ever meet. I just took my first spin class as was terrified I was going to fall off my bike.

11. I have 2 DVRs in my house because I can't stand to watch live tv. I will even pause a show coming on right away just to skip through the commericals.

Bright Zoya Polish & Lips To Match

I'm not usually a lip and nail matcher. I like them not to clash, but most of the time there isn't much thought that goes into it. Last month when Zoya was giving away 2 free bottles of polish, I asked everyone on facebook and twitter what colors you all were getting. Then I took your suggestions and checked out my current collection and decided to go bright.

When they came in the mail, I had just picked up a few new Revlon lipsticks (darn you Ulta and your bogo sales!) and realized that one was an exact match for one of my new polishes. Upon further review of my cosmetics collection, I found another lipstick for the other polish! Not sure if I'll be wearing them together yet. I'm thinking of mixing them up and wearing the melon with the pink and vice versa.

I was sad to hear a few girls didn't like the polish colors they selected. It's really easy to do when ordering online since colors show up differently based on lighting and monitor settings. I'm a huge fan of Google image search. I always image search colors before I buy. (I did it before I ordered these, just to make sure.) I especially like to see the color painted on someone's nails and there are a ton of girls (and bloggers) who post images for practically every color imaginable. It's also good to double check to see if you're getting a creme, frost, sheer or matte formula. I always keep am eye out because I'm not a fan of sheer coverage on my nails.

You met, fell in love and are getting married in Cleveland. So why are you using chain non-local vendors? This was the thought that hit me when I walked into the Boutique Bridal Bazaar on Sunday that the girls at Something White Bridal put on at Dredgers Union. It was there first annual event and with all the eat, drink, shop local vibe we are all hooked on as of late, I bet it won't be the last.

I'm not getting married. Already did that about 8 years ago. I know what it's like to dream about your perfect day and have years of Martha Stewart Wedding snippits as inspiration. Where was Pinterest then? Trying to fit your dreams (and guest list) into your budget. Oooh, I hate that word. Budget is a four letter word in my book.

Dredgers Union is an amazing space and Sunday's event was a great fit. The right amount of (good) vendors so that you didn't feel overwhelmed. It had a handpicked quality to it that you don't see at the larger mass-media bridal fair. Where you have to hunt and peck between the good and not-so-great offerings. This felt very selective. Yet, since the majority of vendors were local, not only did much of it fit into a great price point, they know how to work it around what you want to spend. You're going to spend the money anyway, you might as well give it to someone you know, and there were a lot of familiar faces there.

SAG Awards - Fashion, Fun & A Drinking Game

Drinking game alert! (ala Andy Cohen) Every time someone says Scorsese take a guzzlet of your cocktail.
Thanks to the ladies of Bridesmaids for amping it up and getting down and dirty. This is gonna be a fun night.

The vibe at Sunday's SAGs was upbeat, laid-back and (dare I say) drinky. The stars were enjoying themselves, laughing and having a ton of fun. Yes, even Angie! The red carpet was a bit more exciting than the Globes, but I'm left a bit confused by some and a bit irritated that I didn't have that oh-mi-god I'm dying moment. But there were some great picks, some really not-so-great-picks and some trending. And you know how I love myself a trend.
Note to self: Next time the girls and I get together lets all wear the same trend. Like leather leggings.

Lea Michele - Go ahead, laugh, but I like a girl who can pose. And she can out pose Zoolander. Love her hair down and she is all glowy and gorgeous but it all seems a bit forced. Can you tell that her shoe is at least a size too big? Who knows, maybe she swells after a night out.

Michelle Williams - Everyone seemed to love this dress and she's already on a lot of best-dressed lists. I find it a bit - meh. And the shoes look cheap like they came from Bakers. It also doesn't help that she's now getting as weird and standoff-ish as Kristen Stewart. Watching her being interviewed on the red carpet was painful. Yes, we know you're miserable and want to stay home and be a mom. Go! We didn't beg you to be so amazing.

Jayma Mays - I adore this dress. Love it from neck to toe. I don't know what I would have wanted her to do with her hair or jewelry but not this. What is wrong with me?!

Natalie Portman - Oh Nat, you are sublime. Just not in this color. You look a bit washed out and way less fabulous than your are. Please get it together before the Oscars, please.

Julie Bowen - The color of this dress is spot on. And I love the draping, but something (hair maybe?) is a bit off and I can't put my finger on it.

Emilia Clarke - It's every girl's dream to wear Chanel Couture and this dress is stunning. On someone older and taller this would be fantastic. It looks ill-fitting and the messy updo isn't helping.

Kristen Wiig - I'm getting irritated because Kristen can be pretty hot. She needs to let that hair down, lose the choker and grab some stellar cuffs.

Worst Dressed

Shana Woodley - You are such a sweet, sweet dear and this dress is all kinds of terrible and reminds me of a really bad 90's moment.

Amber Riley - Rip that bow off child and show off that body! You look like you're going to a homecoming dance.

Heather Morris - There is no excuse for this. That is all.

Tilda Swinton - I love myself some Tilda but as she proved at the Globes, you've got to go very structural to pull off a pale color on such porcelain skin.

Angelina Jolie - Ok. You're thinking this isn't so terrible, right? But it's Angelina Jolie! There is a whole other standard when it comes to her. I'm not a fan of this fabric. It kind of looks like a black garbage bag. And someone get her a burger - can't you see she's starving!

Gretchen Mol - Do you watch Boardwalk Empire? She's insanely beyond gorgeous. Not that you can tell here.

Now Boarding: Chanel - Sky High in Paris

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is less than two weeks away and I'm already beginning to twitch. There is this thrill that comes with watching the shows as they happen. In my case, streaming live off my macbook in the comfort of my living room. I plan out the week, which designers I like to watch live (and fit into my schedule) and which I will catch up on in between.

All this means that Tuesday's Chanel Haute Couture SS 2012 show was simply a teaser of the swooning to come. There was nothing I didn't absolutely love in the 14 minute show. Recreated larger-than-life aircraft? check. Sky high faux hawks adorned with feathers? check. Ambient ballast mood lighting? check.

Bacon - In The Oven

I'm a huge bacon lover. I'm not a huge fan of cooking bacon. For years I only fried it in a pan. Not only was I completely inept at this process -half cooked half burnt- but it stunk up the whole kitchen (not to mention my hair). Who wants to walk around smelling like bacon all day? That might be a conversation for another time.

I started getting this amazing, thick cut bacon from our CSA and I needed a better way to cook it so I wasn't ruining it. I ended up going to my end all, be all place for culinary guidance - Chow.com, where I learned how easy it is to bake bacon. They have the best videos on mastering just about anything in the kitchen.

Want to learn how to:
Make a Doritos consomme?
Chop an onion without crying?
Cut proper fruit wedges?
Tell the age of an egg?
Fix undercooked Thanksgiving turkey?
Get stuck pie dough off the counter?
Pop popcorn in a wok?
Go to chow for the most memorable to mundane tips and videos.

First I turn the oven to 400 degrees. I do not preheat the oven. I just turn it on as I'm getting the baking sheet ready.
Then I line a baking sheet with foil (for easy cleanup), followed by a layer of parchment paper (to prevent sticking) and the slices of bacon. It doesn't really matter how close they are together since they will shrink up while cooking.

Put bacon-filled baking sheet into the oven and bake for 15-18 mins. I start checking it about 15 minutes in. No need to turn it, just leave it on the sheet.

When it looks done, pull it out of the oven and let rest (and drain) on a paper-towel lined plate.

This method is super easy and all you've got to do (once the bacon fat cools down) for clean up is roll the foil up on each end and and throw away!

So many fun things went on in the last week that I'm in a constant state of love for my city. Usually spending copious amounts of time defending why I choose to live here, I ended up spending the week with others like me - Clevelanders who LOVE their city!

Starting out with finally getting to meet all the fun CLE bloggers in person at the Ohio Blogging Association meetup at Whole Foods. There was much food and wine to go around and I felt like I was having an US Weekly moment getting to meet in-real-life all the cool bloggers I read. There may or may not have been excessive squealing (on my part) and conversation that girls with beer growlers are hot.

A quick stop at my favorite place for some vino and then a wine & tapas party over at Jaclyn & Oliver's, where we met even more new friends and consumed whites, then reds, then bubbly followed by more red and even more bubbly. Rolling home after 2 in the morning meant that I would definitely need a Sunday afternoon nap before the Crazy Tweetup at the Greenhouse Tavern for Chef Sawyers Iron Chef premiere. My favorite tweet of the night was from @rimthree: A duck fat grease fire @thegreenhouse would put a crimp in Cleveland culinary and social media scenes - so true!

OPI GelColor - Louvre Me, Louvre Me Not & Lea Michele's Hot Lipstick

After my NYE glittered nail look I decided to give my nails a bit of a rest. I've had some form of shellac, gelish, gelcolor on nonstop since spring/summer. I would wear each color for at least 2 weeks and then have that one taken off and another put on. So basically my nails got about 20 mins a month rest. I wasn't sure if this was ruining my nails, making them stronger or what.

I removed the shellac myself for the first time. (Usually I just have it done at the salon.) Soaking a cotton ball in pure acetone, I then put it on top the nail and wrapped the fingertip in foil. After 10 minutes, I took them off and the polish came off in one sheet. Pretty easy!

I let them rest for a week and I can say for sure that my nails are stronger than they've ever been. I've always had peeling nails and nothing over the years has been able to help. Until now. My nails were also super long, so I filed them down because I couldn't stand to look at them any longer.

Now that my nails were super short I knew I couldn't go too dark or too bright so I picked out OPI GelColor in Louvre Me Louvre Me Not.

Last night's Golden Globes was the first time I can remember almost falling asleep watching the red carpet. Did I miss the memo? I was so geared up for glamour and huge pops of color. A little neon. Take-out At Home - Sesame Chicken & General Tso's Chicken

I'm a huge fan of chinese take-out. There's something about all those little containers of food that simply makes me happy. The husband, however, is not a fan. I'm not sure if he's ever even had it, but whenever I do, he says it smells up the house and won't even taste it. I don't indulge very often and when I do I usually swell up terribly from all the sodium that I can't even get my wedding ring on. Which, oddly enough, doesn't make me stop craving it. For me it's the ultimate in comfort food.

When I spotted these recipes for lighter, at-home versions, I was intrigued. I've never tried to re-create my faves at home before. Which is weird now that I think about it since I love to cook so much. (I've made many stir frys, but that's usually just using up whatever we have left in the house.)

Both these recipes are quite similar, pretty much the sauces are different, and both were a huge hit. The husband loving the sesame one more and myself loving the General Tso one more. They were both high on the indulgent-feeling, comfort food factor and we ate both with chopsticks which was fun.

General Tso's Chicken - adapted from this recipe via The Chew.

Sauce-
1/2 cup cold water
2 teaspoons fresh grated ginger
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch
4 sliced garlic cloves
3 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon red pepper flakes

Chicken-
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into 1 inch pieces
2 tablespoons sesame oil
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/12 cups rice
1 teaspoon sesame seeds
4 scallions (green parts only)
1 pound broccoli cut into florets

Prepare rice per instructions on package.

In large ziploc bag, add cornstarch, chicken, salt and pepper. Shake to mix. Heat oil in large skillet. Shake excess coating off chicken and cook in batches until golden, 4-6 mins.

Steam or blanch broccoli. Drain, set aside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together cornstarch and cold water until smooth. Add garlic, ginger, honey soy sauce and red pepper flakes.
Add sauce mixture to cooked chicken over medium heat until sauce is thickened (about 2 mins)
Plate with rice, adding broccoli, scallions and sesame seeds.

Sesame Chicken - adapted from Better Homes & Gardens
*This can also be a vegetarian dish, just replace the chicken with extra-firm tofu and the chicken broth with vegetable broth.

5 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
4 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons sesame oil
5 teaspoons honey
1 1/4 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breasts cut into 1 inch pieces
2 green onions, thinly slices, white and green parts separated
1 T freshly grated ginger
3 cloves minced garlic
1 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken stock
4 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon chili paste
1 head broccoli cut into small florets
3 tablespoons sesame seeds
hot cooked brown rice

In a medium bowl whisk together 3 Tbsp. soy sauce, 1 tsp. sesame oil and 2 tsp. honey. Add chicken, toss to coat and let marinate for 20 minutes. Remove chicken with slotted spoon and discard marinade.
Heat 2 Tbsp. sesame oil in a large non-stick skillet over med-high heat. Cook chicken in batches, 6 mins or until cooked through. Remove and set aside.

Steam broccoli until crisp-tender, 4-5 mins

In a small bowl whisk together broth, remaining soy sauce and honey, cornstarch, vinegar and chili paste until smooth. In same skillet (as chicken was cooked) heat 2Tbsp. sesame oil over med-high heat. Add white parts of scallions, ginger and garlic 1-2 mins or until fragrant. Add sauce to skillet, cooking for 2-3 mins until thickened. Stir in remaining 1 tsp. sesame oil. Add reserved, cooked chicken.

Spoon chicken, sauce and steamed broccoli over hot rice and sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions.

So Not Down With The Sickness

It seems everyone in the CLE is sick. With temps being an unseasonably 50 degrees here, the germs just keep going around.

Who was I to think I could escape? Especially when the husband (aka germ carrier) came home with it. For the record, he never gets sick and has needed to go to the doctor approx 2 times in his 40 year existence. He usually stays healthy while bringing the germ home for me to enjoy. thanks, honey

So now he's sick. Like a virus, sick. How am I supposed to take care of someone who for 1. is a guy and 2. hates to be taken care of - all while trying to keep a 3 foot radius from him and his germ and run around the house with a can of lysol. That didn't work out too well. As I came down with the sickness just days later. ARGHHHH! Oh well, at least I have great company, as I said earlier everyone is sick.

Problem is I hate tea, and juice and boring brothy soups. Pretty much everything that you need to consume while sick. I like candy and creamy things and wine.

Has anyone ever gotten better on a steady diet of Dots and Malbec? Cause the germ carrier says no.
