Influenster - Beauty Blogger Vox Box

Influenster is at it again and have sent along a box of goodies filled to the brim with beauty & lifestyle products.

They always seem to read my mind, picking out things I've coveted or spotted at Target and for some reason or another haven't made it into my basket.

Included:
Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin - I've literally had these in my hand and can't remember why I never purchased these. Maybe I thought they wouldn't work as advertised or hold my hair properly. All these notions are unfounded as these little spin pins are pretty close to a miracle. Just screw them in and you are set with a darling chignon or topnot. To undo, simply unscrew and your hair is safe from snags and pulls that usually can sometimes happen with hair pins.

Bath & Body Works mini candle in Black Pepper Bergamot - Yet another example of something I had on my shopping list that Influenster sent to my door step. It really is a bit eerie the way this happens. While scanning the latest scents online before my seasonal trip to B&BW to stock up on candles, I came across this Black Pepper Bergamot and put it on my sniff-list. Hints of pepper and bergamot create an ultra sexy woodsy scent that is kept from being overly heavy with just a touch of lavender. Basically, this smells like one especially charming man. Also included was a coupon to purchase a 3-wick candle ($20 value) for $10.

Kiss Ever Pro Lashes Starter Kit - Yippee! False lashes! Seriously, what could be more fun than this? I've read so many articles over the years on how to properly do them but I've always chickened out actually doing them myself. Now I have no excuse. The kit comes with applicator, glue and a set of lashes. Here's hoping I don't glue my eyes shut. That would not be glamorous.

Not Your Mother's Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream - Infused with grape seed and jasmine to encourage natural curls. Since I spend most of my waking hours trying to discourage my crazy natural curl, this will go to a friend. I'll let you know if it's mind-blowing and she falls in love.

New York Color Individual Eyes Custom Compact - I received this is Dark Shadows which comes with a primer, highlighter and four shadows. This is more of a 'party palette' since all the colors are sparkly. Pure white, grey/silver, metallic carbon and frosted black are included. The concept of having everything you need in one compact is appealing, I'm just not sure it needs to be all glitter. I'd appreciate at least one matte or suede shade. The collection I received is a limited edition and I think I'd like this in "Central Park" or "Smokey Browns" a bit better.

EBOOST in Orange - I'm obsessed with anything that will curb an impending cold or flu-like symptom. I've used these all natural packets before and they're a great way to head off a germ and give you enough of a "boost" to get through a sluggish workday. The small packets are great to keep in your handbag or desk and are especially good while flying. Just add water. Available in Orange, Pink Lemonade, Acai Pomegranate and Super Berry.

Vitabath Fragrance Mist in Heavenly Coconut Creme - I don't typically use a body mist but I would eat this if I could. It smells like a fresh coconut cupcake straight out of the oven.

Want to get in on the fun? Head over to Influenster and request an invite.

Get There - Crust Tremont

A slightly chilly and rainy day that follows up glorious 80 degree weather just screams comfort food. Yes, you were grilling on the patio and enjoying some Christmas Ale yesterday. You did not imagine it. But we're back to life as usual in October and I say this calls for little pillows of heaven - gnocchi.

Last Friday, I was too lazy to even think about cooking dinner and heard about this great new place, Crust, on Kenilworth that was a made-from-scratch kitchen serving up pizzas, pasta, salads and subs. We had a bit of a hard time deciding what to order since there were so many great things on the menu. Ultimately we decided on the spanish chorizo pizza (because I cannot resist goat cheese and chorizo - either alone or together) and the mushroom gnocchi.

To my dismay they were out of pizza dough. They were quite polite and very apologetic over the phone and explained how it takes 2 days to make the dough and they had no idea they'd be this busy. We ended up going with 2 orders of gnocchi and you can never go wrong with that.

Mushroom Gnocchi - mixed mushrooms, rosemary, garlic with white truffle oil in a parmesan cream sauce

Butternut Squash Gnocchi - slab bacon, sage and caramelized onion, finished with pumpkinseed oil and an apple cider reduction {hello lover}

This is only about 1/3 of the portion they gave us.

Head on over to the new Crust in Tremont and get your gnocchi on, you won't be disappointed. I promise!

While you're in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by Wine & Design and snag a bottle of Rare Red. This blend of Syrah, Barbera, Zinfandel and Sangiovese is simply delightful, pairs well with your gnocchi and will only set you back $11.99.

Goop + Birchbox = Heaven

For the month of October, Birchbox offered subscribers the option of choosing a Goop designed Birchbox or a regular box with a theme of transformation. Obsessed with Ms. Paltrow (and her lifestyle site) as I am, it was a pretty easy decision for me. And you know how I love a great collaboration. Hoping my box would arrive with everything I'd need to get Gwyneth's radiant skin, effortless hair and all around casual glow, thankfully it didn't disappoint.

Goop Birchbox October 2012

Included:
Miracle Skin Transformer - SPF20 Face - This 3-in-1 primer, serum, face tint is from the company that makes the best concealer I have ever used. This has been on my must-try list to see if it really does leave you with flawless skin.

Orofluido - Beauty Elixir - Is this what Gwyneth Paltrow smells like? Because this smells divine. I can't even get over it. I have been using this decadent hair oil on the ends of my hair, rough elbows, knees and wherever else I can smooth it on. Nourishing argan, linseed and cyperus oils leave everything it touches feel like silk.

Chantecaille - Brilliant Gloss - This non-sticky gloss is one of the best 'your lips but better' products I've come across in a while. Looking for the perfect nude gloss that won't wash even your palest winter skin out? Pick this up in Charm and you'll be one happy girl. My only complaint is that the tube is so tiny. I already need to order the full size.

DDF - Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer - This moisturizing serum fills in pores and wrinkles for instantly smooth skin all while delivering anti-aging benefits. Does it work? I hope so.

extra - Luna Bar- Lemon Zest

What did you opt for this month? Did you fall in love with anything?

Glossybox - October 2012 Spa Luxe

One of my favorite beauty subscriptions arrived a bit earlier than usual this month. October's Glossybox is themed Spa Luxe and has products to help you break away from the stress of the day and "rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit." I'm all for promoting a little om these days. With many festivities on the schedule, now may be our best time to take a few minutes to relax and pamper before the holiday season arrives. I love that they put together little things that you can do at the end of a busy day (enzyme facial peel) and ways to treat yourself daily (loofa soap, shea souffle).

Glossybox USA - October 2012
Included:
Carol's Daughter - Shea Souffle in Ecstasy- shea butter, cocoa butter, and jojoba oil leaves your skin incredibly soft and the blend of sugared strawberry, island mango and egyptian musk will whisk you away to...well, ecstasy.  non-greasy, paraben, and mineral oil free.

Nastassja Skin - Enzyme Facial Peel - infused with vitamins and minerals, this gently exfoliates dry skin with papain, a naturally occurring enzyme in papaya.

Alterna Bamboo - Luminous Shine Mist - control frizz and flyaways while imparting a glossy shine. this weightless formula is eco-certified.

MODELCO - Lip Duo - long-lasting lipstick and gloss duo

Heartland Fragrances - Exfoliating Loofa Soap in Secret Garden - handpoured loofa soap encased in glycerin provides moisture and exfoliation

Physique 57 - coupon for 20% off their Barre Workout DVDs

One thing that Glossybox does very well is their monthly mini-mag. Roughly 20 pages of tips, product reviews, and behind-the-scenes info on this month's box.

Rewind: L'Amour du Vin 2012

Last Thursday the husband and I headed out to Avon Oaks Country Club for the Arthritis Foundation's 15th annual L'Amour du Vin presented by EMH Healthcare. The drive was idyllic as we drove through one of the best fall seasons I can remember. The air was crisp and the leaves were impressive shades of yellow, orange and red.

Never having been to Avon Oaks before I wasn't sure to expect, but I did know that the Arthritis Foundation can throw one heck of a party. It turned out to be a superb evening of fine wine, food and friends.

Upon arrival we headed to the VIP check in and were given wine glass pins, giving us easy access to roam between the general admission and VIP area. There we met up with Jen, Amanda, Alicia and their husbands, grabbed our wine glasses and were ready to start tasting.

Amanda, Jen, our hostess Alicia, and me
The main ballroom was packed with a silent auction and wines from every region imaginable. Sweet German Rieslings and Gewurztraminers, Italian Montepulcianos, wonderful blends and Cabernets from California, Malbecs from Argentina and Syrah from Chile were just a few of the offerings. There were too many to possibly try them all, but there was something for everyone.

In the midst of all this wine there was a delectable array of food from restaurants I have yet to visit. As a resident of Ohio City, I unfortunately don't know much about the restaurant scene west of Rocky River. We have such a great culinary scene here that sometimes it's hard to get out of your own backyard. That's about to change because I sampled some pretty incredible food.

Smoked gouda chicken mac and cheese from Wood & Wine, farfalle with roasted red pepper cream sauce from Ahern and mushroom risotto from Gatherings Kitchen were some of my favorite savory bites. Not to be outdone, however, Kiedrowski's Simply Delicious Bakery had an insane array of cupcakes, cookies and the biggest pumpkin roll I've ever seen.

The 3 foot long pumpkin roll and heavenly cupcakes.
I was a happy girl when we made our way back to the VIP area. But there was even more fun to be had.

Live music filled the Key Bank VIP Room and The Spa at EMH was on hand offering neck, shoulder and foot massages. Brown-Forman was mixing up delightful cocktails in one corner and Watershed Distillery in the other with their signature Vodka and Gin. I had quite a lovely pear infused apple cider vodka cocktail which I'll be sure to re-create at home. Along with these stunners:

Cocktails from Brown-Forman
Even though I was getting quite full, there was no way I was turning down what AMP150 was offering. I may have snuck back to get a few helpings of pork belly with roasted corn and squash soups with five-spice pumpkin seeds. I cannot resist the pork belly!

Keep an eye out next year, this is an event that you won't want to miss.

::Disclosure: I received 2 VIP tickets in exchange for promoting and offering my views on this event c/o the Arthritis Foundation of Northeast Ohio. As always, all musings are my own::

Rolling On The River Recap 2012

Last Friday night I had the pleasure of attending the 6th annual Rolling on the River. It was an evening of gaming and giving back, benefiting the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland. Windows on the River was the perfect backdrop and they did a spectacular job of transforming the space into a casino.

Tables and tables of silent auction items greeted you as you entered. In fact, the bounty was so impressive it took me awhile to migrate out of my wonderment and into the rest of the room.

Keep Calm and Bid On was the theme.

Blackjack tables took up the middle of the main room with roulette and craps tables along the sides. Everyone was given $2000 in "casino money" to gamble with. You could then turn your winnings into raffle tickets for fantastic prizes.

I'm usually not a gambling girl, but since this was fun money I was determined to get my game on. Note to self - next year, grab a seat at the blackjack tables first. Those fill up fast. I tried my hand at roulette was was up about $2000 when I lost all but $500 at the craps table. The band was mad fun and was playing my favorite Frank, Ella and Louis Armstrong favorites. Who doesn't love a flirty Sinatra-esque lead singer in a fedora?

top: the girls - Becky, Stacy, Michelle, me, Monina, Charlene
bottom: taking in the scene

There was so much to do between the silent auction, cocktails, games, green screen and photo booth, I had to remind myself to eat. All in all it was a splendid night supporting one of our regions great charities. I'll definitely be back next year!

photo booth time!

The evening wouldn't be complete without the post-fundraiser tradition of a beer at the Harbor Inn.

To learn more about the Hunger Network and their mission to stop hunger in its tracks please visit their site and see how you can help.

Couldn't make it to Rolling on the River?
Tickets are now available for their holiday fete, The Best Party of the Year, Friday, December 7th.

::Disclosure - I was honored to be invited to this event by the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland in exchange for sharing my experience. All musings are my own. I will be first in line to buy tickets to this great event next year!::

Sample Society - October 2012

Here we go. It's October and I am really looking forward to what fall/winter will have in store for beauty subscriptions. I'm thinking ultra luxe lip balms, cushiony handcremes and cuticle oils.

Self tanner? Hmmmm. I guess we aren't likely to get any real rays up north here, so it kind of makes sense. By this time of year I'm pretty set on my self tanning products and aren't likely to try some new ones out. But self tanner is what I got in the latest Sample Society box. One good point, however, is that I can slather it all over and if it's a disaster I can cover up with pants and long sleeves.

Sample Society - Oct 2012

Included:
Oscar Blandi - Pronto Wet Instant Volumizing Conditioner  - for everyday use
Kate Somerville - ExfoliKate - intensive exfoliating treatment
Erno Laszlo - Phormula 3-9 Repair Balm - smooths scars, wounds, burns and dry skin
Aromachology - Clean & Fresh EDP
Herban Essentials - Lavender Towelette
Jane Iredale - Tantasia Self Tanner

Thoughts:
I'm having a love/hate moment with this box. I usually don't hate on anything beauty-subscription related because I understand the concept so well. You can't make everyone happy all the time. If there is something I'm not going to use, I put it in a box for my girlfriends. No biggie. You won't get everything you love all the time. Perhaps I'm just cranky.
But still....

Loving the Erno Laszlo. To me this brand is nectar from the gods and you can't really go wrong with anything in their line. The ExfoliKate has been heralded as one of the best exfoliants around and says it combats acne, blackheads and discoloration. Come to mama. I'm a huge fan of Herban Essentials and their little towelettes (that are so perfect for travel) available in many scents.

Again..with the self-tanner. It might also be that I'm not crazy about anything Jane Iredale. The perfume is ok. It smells like soap. And while I'm usually happy to receive hair product, it would have been nice to also get the shampoo. If this were an intensive conditioner I'd be fine with just trying that. But being a volumizing product, I'm more likely to want to try the pair.

::Sample Society is a monthly beauty subscription service for $15::

Celebrating 100 Years of the West Side Market

In another of the many fantastic events to commemorate the West Side Market Centennial, Sunday was the much anticipated parade and festival.

The day started out chilly and dry, but by the time we were ready to leave it started to rain. Not wanting to deal with the parking frenzy, we took our bikes. Cue up the rain poncho. (For me. The husband is too cool for said poncho and truth be told, his hair wouldn't get ruined in the rain anyway)

They had an entire street closed off for bike parking and even had a valet so you didn't need to worry about locking your bike up or anything. If it wasn't raining this place would have been packed.

Every where else was packed and I was thankful that my girlfriends and their husbands arrived earlier and grabbed us a table in the lower level pub at Great Lakes Brewing Co.

The Husband & I.
I wussed out on having Nosferatu and went with Oktoberfest for breakfast.
Market Avenue; posing in our fall best.

The rain didn't keep anyone away and the streets were packed with food and fun. We strolled a bit, stopped by SOHO to say a quick hello to Charlene, then headed over to Nano Brew, which has quickly become one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. Mainly because of these:

Jen went with the Penny-farthing, Amanda had the Fixie,
and I stuck to my favorite, the Squeaky Wheel.

Scott, Amanda, Jen, Matthew, Chris & me

Then we headed into the Market for a bit and it was exciting to see them open on a Sunday.

We strolled and chatted up the vendors. They were just as excited as we were and told stories of the recent visit with the President and fun/crazy/memorable times over the years.

Wanting to get my shopping fix on we headed into Room Service where I proceeded to oooh and ahhh over everything to the point that my husband had to practically drag me out.

...but it's all so darling!

and these would be perfect in our Ohio City kitchen!

Food trucks lined the area south of Lorain.

All in all, it was a wonderful afternoon and the rain didn't seem to dampen anyone's spirits. Cheers to another 100 years!
