Sample Society Review - April 2012

Here is what I received in my April Sample Society box. If you aren't familiar with them, they are a beauty subscription service (similar to Birchbox) coming to you from the team at Allure &  It ships monthly and costs $15.

They also have a great referral program. If you are a subscriber, they will donate $30 to charity for each person you refer through a special link. As a subscriber, you can choose between 5 pre-selected charities. I couldn't pick just one so I am having them split the donation between them evenly.

The FEED Foundation
The American Red Cross
Best Friends Animal Society
The Make-A-Wish Foundation
Save Play / KaBoom

So if this is something you're interested in, please purchase through the banner below or use the promo code SMITTEN and $30 will go to a great cause.

April 2012 Sample Society Box

What's included:
Murad - Hybrids Skin Perfecting Primer (Acne & Shine Control)
Oscar Blandi - Jasmine Oil Hair Serum

In typical Allure fashion, you also receive a booklet with tips using the products included for the month. Unlike most services, which give you a card listing what you receive, Sample Society has a page on each.

For example this month they focused on:
::Three steps to banishing flyaways
::Cleansing 101 - Dermatologists share their tips
::Surpercharging your skincare - 4 secrets you need to know
::How to prevent shine - tweaking your skin and makeup routine
::Sensitive skin tricks - precautions and pampering

So far (2 months in) it seems heavily skincare/haircare based. You also receive a one year subscription to Allure.
For more information on this subscription service check out my initial review and the March box here.

Table 45 - Blast From The Past Dinner

A few weeks ago it was my friend Charlene's birthday. She wasn't excited about this milestone and insisted on telling all of us it would be 'her last one'. But then something strange happened. She started getting really lucky. Lucky like scoring tickets to the Rock Hall Induction Ceremony, having a long fabulous weekend of celebrating with the best of friends and winning Table 45's Blast From The Past contest.

She was done. Seriously, the next logical step was for her to play the lottery. The windfall came my way when she asked me to be her date on Tuesday. Uh, YEAH. I'm there! Now I'm the lucky one.

Table 45 is probably Zack Bruell's least visited restaurant by locals. We're spoiled with Parallax in Tremont, everyone loves L'Albatros, Chinato on East 4th and his newest gem, Cowell & Hubbard. I for one, always overlook Table 45 since it's connected to the InterContinental and Cleveland Clinic. But it just might be his best.

The concept of the contest was to pick your favorite dish from past years/menus. Winners were picked at random and treated to a multi-course best-of dinner. At the Chef's Table. There were 4 winners and each could bring one guest.

I'm not a food writer, so here's my pictorial recap. Girl About Cleveland was there, so be sure to head over and read her recap. It will have your mouth watering

Our place at the Chef's Table - View of the kitchen - Chef Thomas Schrenk

-Menu of the night-

top - grilled hearts of romaine salad
bottom - vegetarian lasagna

top - rice paper wrapped crab cake
bottom - Thai coconut broth

rack of lamb w/ Indian mint sauce

apple gillette w/ mint & creme anglaise

Not only was each course better than the next, and paired with wine, but we had wonderful dining company. Great conversation ensued as we realized we all follow each other on twitter. There were many inappropriate food tweets that evening that may or may not have included a smoked sea salt smelling like 'sexy man'. Ideas about a summer backyard potluck from the lovely Cara and her husband Jeff. But the best moment of the evening came when Chris asked if they still did the scotch egg to which the Chef replied that they did and could we hang out for a bit while he fired one up. So even though we were all beyond stuffed, no one was passing up a taste of that lamb chorizo scotch egg.

It was an exquisite evening and I cannot wait to get back!

A huge thanks to Charlene for bringing me as her date, Chef Screnk and Table 45 for a lovely evening. I'm quite the lucky girl.

Fabulous Hair w/ ONE Styling - Epic & Legacy Collections

I'm that girl that's defined by her hair. It's inevitable if you're a redhead. In a world of blondes and brunettes you stand out. For good or for bad. I never had a choice. Not only was my hair bright flaming red as a child (thankfully it's mellowed in time) but it was curly. And tangly. And my mother, after fighting to brush it one too many times, cut it all off. Leaving me with a q-tip of a haircut at the age when all you want to do is look like everyone else. You know, plain, simple. with straight hair. And seriously any other color.

Any good therapist would tell you that the above story is why my hair will always be long. As if all my power is in my hair. Cut it and I'm defeated. It's not my mother's fault-who wants to fight with their daughter's hair every morning? But years of being either loved or teased for your hair will make you very particular about it.

All this is just setting up my excuses for why I'm hair obsessed. I will only use THE BEST tools on it. This is one of those instances where 'you get what you pay for'. My hair is naturally curly, frizzy and tends to have a mind of its own. So I blow it out. I flat iron it and I curl it. The only way to keep your hair in good condition is to use styling tools with smart technology.  My hair is incredibly healthy, moisturized and strong and this is why: ONE Styling.

I've used these tools for quite awhile now (some I received as just prototypes before they were on the market) so when ONE Styling came to me and wanted to do a blogger event I was thrilled.

If you like anything you see you can get 35% off, free shipping and a free heat mat at with the promo code SMITTEN35

Here's what I use and why:

Epic Pro Dryer
This hair dryer will change your life. It retails at $240($156 w/ promo code) but it is a salon professional product. It's meant to be used and abused and will withstand anything you put it though. It's incredibly tough but super gentle on hair. It will aslo cut your drying time by half. Really.

Favorite Features:
Ionic Intel System: Switch back and forth with the touch of a button between positive and negative ions. Got thin, flat hair? Use positive ions to boost volume. Need to reduce frizz? Use negative ions for a sleek, smooth finish.
Ceramic Spheres purify the outgoing airflow, removing carbon dioxide while activations water molecules to replenish moisture to the hair and minimize damage.

If you flat iron your hair you need to be using a quality product. You might be able to skimp on some other tools but you cannot skimp on this. I've used many expensive irons in the past (CHI, GHD, Babyliss, FHI etc...) and there are two I recommend from One Styling. It really depends what you'll be using it for.

Epic Flat Iron
This is my daily go-to iron. It comes in 2 sizes (medium 1 1/4" or slim 7/8") and retails for $240 ($156 w/ promo code).

Favorite Features:
Digital temp control up to 450F (heats up in under 60 seconds)
Energy Smart Technology: automatically decreases temp to conserve energy while idle and instantly returns to preset temp once you pick it up.
Black Nano Titanium Plates: create an ultra smooth surface which can also be used for Keratin Straightening
Tourmaline Technology: maximizes negative ionic output which locks in moisture and eliminates static and frizz (my favorite feature)
Gentle far infrared heat: penetrates hair follicle to minimize heat damage
Auto shut off kicks in after 40 mins of non-use
World Volt Technology: OMG! Where has this been my whole life? Automatic F to C conversion.

Legacy Flat Iron
This is my other favorite and it would be hard to pick just one. The reason I like this one is it's the same model type as what you're probably using now. There is a temp dial and standard 1" size makes it perfect for flat ironing and using your flat iron to curl or wave your hair. (I still have a bit of trouble waving my hair with the epic iron primarily because I have the 1 1/4" size).

Favorite Features:
Retails for $180 ($117 w/ promo code)
Crushed diamond-infused plates create a smooth glide
The same Tourmaline Technology as listed above
Nano Triplex Technology helps condition hair and eliminate toxins
Floating beveled plates

These are all professional salon tools so they are all extremely sturdy and meant to withstand just about anything. They all have extra long cords and the flat iron cords swivel.

"Like" ONE Styling on Facebook and be automatically entered to win a styling tool! They give one away every Friday

::Disclosure:: I was provided these tools c/o ONE Styling and practically begged them to let me know when they were available to the public so I could blog about them. As always, my opionions are 100% my own.

Mad Men Monday - Swedish Meatballs & Moscow Mules

Happy Monday Kittens!

This week it was Swedish Meatball time. I found this recipe a couple of years ago. It's really one of the easiest dishes to make (other than the time it takes rolling the balls). You can do it ahead of time and the sauce takes literally 5 minutes to put together. The recipe I linked to makes 2 batches so you can freeze half or serve it all if you're having a party. Nothing says party like a meatball. Cocktail meatballs, italian meatballs, greek lamb balls or these Swedish balls. I love them all.

I went with an easy simple dress, (yep, the same one I wore for my birthday) threw the hair up and added some fun earrings. A moscow mule and the party was on. The husband even started a round of 'Zou Bisou Bisou'.

What I wore:

Yes, apparently I need a spray tan ASAP.
This is the true color of my person and I don't think I've seen it in years.
dress - H&M
shoes - Kelsi Dagger Linzy pump
earrings - Tascha - Nordstrom
bracelet, ring - Ann Taylor

What we drank:
Moscow Mule

I drank mine in a double old-fashioned since I don't have the super cool copper mug. It's on my list to get a few.

left: Moscow Mule - recipe via Mad Men Cocktail Guide
right: Impressions double old-fashioned, avail at Crate & Barrel

On the menu:

Birchbox Sample Closet & April 2012 Box

A few weeks ago I received an email from Birchbox with a promo code to "shop the Birchbox Sample Closet". Spend $125 and pick 10 deluxe samples or $150 and pick out 15 samples. This was perfect since I had an order in mind (and $30 in Birchbox points to redeem). I placed my order and a week or so later received an email saying I could go online and pick out my 10 samples. So imagine, you could make your own insane Birchbox of everything you wanted! There was a list of about 80-100 samples to choose from.

Here's my bounty:

Kerastase - Chroma Sensitive Cleansing Balm (3 long-hair pkts)
Anastasia - Line Erasing Serum (3 pkts)
EVE LOM - The Radiance Cream
Kerastase - Bain Miroir (shine revealing shampoo)
Beautyblender - 1 full-size reusable sponge
The Laundress - Wool & Cashmere Shampoo in cedar (3 pkts)
Jouer - Lip Enhancer
Caudalie - Vinoperfect correcting night cream
Kerastase - Ciment Thermique (heat-activated reconstructing milk)
Jouer - Tint & Highlighter Duo in cinnamon/champagne

Can you tell I love Kerastase? I was finally able to get my hands on some of the items other girls were getting in their boxes that I was coveting. Like the cashmere shampoo. No, I'm not crazy. This is the awesome $18 cashmere shampoo they sell at J. Crew. You can't dry clean it (you know how I love a trip to the cleaners) and I'm practically inept at doing laundry (just ask the husband - I'm constantly flooding the cellar) so I'm going to try and hand-wash said cashmere in the sink. With a cocktail in hand. And some $18 detergent.  What could possibly go wrong?

Anyway...this was a blast and thanks Birchbox! I hope they keep fun surprises like this coming.

Moving on to April's Box. Ah the Earth-friendly box. I remember last year's box not being one of my favorites, so this year my expectations weren't that high. But I was pleasantly surprised. Other than the perfume (which I seriously can't take any more of) and the argan oil (I've already found my Holy Grail oil, so I'm really not interested in trying any more) I really liked everything else.

Yes To Blueberries - Brightening Facial Towelettes - removes makeup, cleanses and moisturizes skin with a blend of natural fruit extracts

Benta Berry G-1 Exfoliating Facial Cleanser - creamy gel exfoliator gives pores a deep cleaning while leaving your skin's natural defense barrier intact.

Pur Minerals - 4 in 1 Tinted Moisturizer - mineral based tint that works as a moisturizer, primer, sheer foundation and has SPF20

Kahina Giving Beauty - Facial Lotion - light non-greasy blend of argan oil and shea butter keeps skin non-greasy yet hydrated

Kahina Giving Beauty - Argan Oil - nourishing hydrator for face, body and hair

Wonderstruck by Taylor Swift

Excited to try:

I was thrilled to get a treat from Benta Berry! This uber gentle skincare brand has made it's way from Paris to the States and I've been dying to check it out.

As a girl who is terrified to go to bed with her makeup on, having an extra set of cleansing towelettes at the ready is a must for late nights when you're too exhausted to wash your face. I'm excited to try these out and I like that they aren't exfoliating.

I don't wear foundation, just tinted moisturizer. I've never used a mineral one but I like the idea of a primer and SPF in one.

What did you get in your Birchbox this month? What are you loving?

**Enter to win 2 VIP tickets to Fashion Week Cleveland's Gala & Runway event on Sat 5/12! Check out my giveaway here**

Are you Team Blonde or Team Brunette?

Alzheimer's doesn't know and doesn't care. It will take away all that you hold dear. It doesn't care how much money you have, where you live, where you are in society or even if you're a good person. Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia. Even though the majority of people with this disease are over the age of 65, this IS NOT a normal part of aging. It is a disease. There is currently no cure, but treatments are available and research continues.

We need your help! This is where you need to decide what team your on. {Redheads are free agents, so feel free to pick your side.}

Blondes vs Brunettes has come to Cleveland to help raise money for the Alzheimer's Association. BvB CLE is a Powder Puff Football event that takes place June 16th on Krenzler Field at Cleveland State University.

You don't need to be a player to get involved. I pretty much told them I'd help out in any way in which I can keep my heels on! Join us tomorrow at:

Battle of the Bombshells Happy Hour - Wed 4/18 at Around the Corner in Lakewood.
The fun starts at 6pm with guest bartenders, raffle baskets and specials.
Get a free entry for the raffle basket of your choice by wearing blue for Team Blonde or purple for Team Brunette.
You can sign up to play or coach (registration closes 4/27) or just find out how to get involved.

::Players are required to attend at least 4 practices and raise at least $250 by June 5th to benefit the care, support and research of the Alzheimer's Association::

You can also submit your own design for the new player's jersey.

Hope to see you there!

Mad Men Monday - Vodka Gimlet & Chicken Kiev

Mad Men Monday will be returning in full force next week. In the meantime, you can catch up on some of my faves. To start is Chicken Kiev & Gimlets. The weather has dipped a bit and the chill has me craving this delectable, baked chicken. Not to mention, my ultimate weakness - The Pioneer Woman's creamed spinach. Need a menu/cocktail idea? Check these out:

{this following post was originally published on 4/16/12}

Are you just loving this season of Mad Men or what?! I don't know if it's just that I've missed them so or if this season is just really good so far. Either way, I'm having a blast. This week I decided to go post-WWII with dinner making Chicken Kiev and creamed spinach. I used panko in lieu of regular breadcrumbs, added in ramps to the butter compound and browned the chicken bundle on the stove, then baked in the oven (rather than fry the whole time). It was delish and quite fun to make.

I don't dress like this every day, but the husband does. (He probably wishes I did, though!)

What I wore:

dress - Lilly Pulitzer (vintage)
bracelets - Lilly Pulitzer
apron - Anthropologie

What we drank:
Vodka Gimlet

I drank mine in a martini glass. Just because.

left: Vodka Gimlet - recipe via Mad Men Cocktail Guide
right: Viv martini glass avail at Crate & Barrel

On the menu:

Chicken Kiev via The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook, creamed spinach via Pioneer Woman and mashed potatoes

High Tea With Burberry At Saks

Tuesday afternoon, Burberry and Saks Fifth Avenue teamed up to offer a close up look at the latest arrivals in their Prorsum, London and Brit collections. And what better way than with a spot of tea.

Tea and coffee were served as well as an array of delicate finger sandwiches, fruit and pastry. I could have nibbled all day. That is, until the fashion began. I quickly lost interest in food altogether and just wanted to try everything on. Local and national Burberry representatives were on hand to give us an up close look into all the latest, answer any questions and teach us how to tie the "Burberry knot" on our trenches. We were also informed that they are discontinuing the Nova Check print handbags in favor of all the other 'checks' (haymarket, smoked, house etc). These should be out of stores by January 2013, so if you have your heart set on one, it's best to scoop it up as they will not be releasing any more in that print.

I fell in love immediately with this dress paired with the tribal clutch.

A great day-to-night option with a hint of sass with that exposed zipper.

The gathering and keyhole on this dress were superb and I love the slit with a bit of length. This just floated across the room.

Pictures don't do this jacket justice. It was an incredible work of art and paired nicely with a silk blouse and great fitting pants. If you haven't tried on pants by Burberry, they all have a hint of stretch giving each a 'spanx like' fit.

Hands-down favorite of the day. Nothing like a black leather pencil skirt paired with a casual olive cropped trench.

Two great summer dresses that easily pair with sky-high sandles or flats.

Learning different ways to tie a scarf.
A classicly casual Burberry look, complete with whipstitched bag.

Bringing in a pop of color with summer whites.
Loving the tassels on a print-free bag.

Comfortable yet chic in an easy knit and white denim with a fun punch of yellow.

The Dutton $1195 and Prorsum Whipstitch $1795

Hard to pick just one.

All the above items are currently available in-store at Saks Beachwood.

A special thank you to Lindsey Yoder and the entire Saks and Burberry team for hosting this event.
