I (heart) Kelly Wearstler

image via

Style icon Kelly Wearstler has a fierce new clothing line that leaves me breathless. She is the original 'it' girl of the design world for me. The 'million dollar decorator' before Bravo took notice (Which I looove, btw!)

You may know her from her colorful coffee table tomes, her stint as a judge on Top Design, or perhaps you've stayed in one of her luxuriously decorated hotels. She takes modern style, a gorgeous palette and whips it up with old-hollywood glamour. With her wild and crazy hair, a perchance for high-drama and a fun party-like sense of style, she's the girl having the most fun - in the entire room.
I'll have what she's having.

Well girls and boys, it's time. Time to set your DVRs for season 9 of Project Runway! (Where is that Lifetime channel anyway?) I still can't get over the switch from Bravo.

Tim, Nina, Michael and Heidi are back along with a new cast of (20!) designers for us to love, hate, frustrate, swoon over and be bored-to-death by.

The bell rings tonight at 9pm. Time to get to Parson's before you're Auf'd.

Cocktails To Cool You

It's hot out there. But really, why are we all surprised? It's late July in the CLE. Everyone acts like winter lasts forever and summer will never get here, then when it does, everyone runs for cover and complains about the heat.
I'm no fan of the heat, personally, which is why you'll NEVER hear me complain about winter or the cold.
Here are some cooling cocktails to get you through the hot, hot week. It's especially nice to use fruit that's in season locally. These are great on the patio or while taking cover indoors.

Peach Collins

via Cupcakes & Cashmere

  • 1/4 cup simple syrup
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup chopped ripe peaches, divided
  • 1/2 cup vodka or gin
  • 1/2 cup club soda
  • peach slices
  • Mix simple syrup, lemon juice, 1/4 cup peaches, and about 1/2 cup ice in a cocktail shaker. Using the end of a wooden spoon or muddler, muddle mixture until peaches start to break up. Pour in vodka, cover shaker with top and shake until blended.
  •  Divide unstrained mixture between 2 tall glasses. Add half the remaining chopped peaches to each, then fill glasses with ice. Top each glass with 1/4 cup club soda and garnish with a peach slice.
  • (adapted from here)

Bourbon & Orange Smash
via Real Simple
  • zest of 1 orange, peeled into strips and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (preferably superfine)
  • 1 tablespoon bitters
  • 3 cups fresh orange juice
  • 3 cups club soda
  • 1 1/2 cups bourbon (12 ounces)
  • In a large pitcher, using a wooden spoon or muddler, mash the orange zest with the sugar and bitters. Add the orange juice, club soda, and bourbon and stir to combine. Serve over ice.

Blueberry Cobbler

via Food & Wine
1/4 cup fresh blueberries
1 lime wedge
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1 1/2 ounces gin
2 ounces chilled club soda

In a cocktail shaker, muddle 15 of the blueberries with the lime wedge and sugar. Add the gin and ice and shake well. Strain into a highball glass half-filled with ice, top with the club soda and garnish with the remaining blueberries.

Pomegranate Lime Fizz
via Real Simple
  • 1 liter club soda
  • 1 1/2 cups pomegranate juice (I love POM's Pomegranate Nectarine)
  • 1 1/2 cups vodka (12 ounces)
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice, plus wedges for garnish
  • 1/4 cup Cointreau or Grand Mariner (2 ounces)
  • In a large pitcher, mix together the club soda, pomegranate juice, vodka, lime juice, and triple sec. Serve over ice, garnished with the lime wedges.
  • -Can be made ahead up to 6 hours in advance. Combine all ingredients except for club soda and chill. Add club soda right before serving.

Let's not forget my favorite all-time easy low cal cocktail....

CND Shellac Review

When I first heard about OPI Axxium, CND Shellac and Nail Harmony Gelish, I was skeptical. What were these gel-soak off-hybrid polishes? I'm really picky and quite obsessive about my nails. Rarely has anyone seen me sans polish. I like them a certain length and as healthy as possible. No fakes here. I was unsure how these products went on (would there be excessive filing?) and how they came off (would my nail beds be damaged?) I waited, checking blogs for reviews to answer all my questions. Finally all were answered, and it WAS possible to get fantastic looking nails for at least 2 weeks with no damage to your natural nail. The trouble was, I saw many photos of nails looking thick, fake and bulbous. It takes a skilled manicurist to ensure even looking polish and they need to also do exactly the right prep in order for it to last with no peeling or chipping.

Unwilling to subject myself to be the guinea pig, I kept an eye out on who was getting this done. Finally my girlfriend came to work with the most gorgeous manicure. When she said it was Shellac I was over the moon! It was perfect. I immediately got the name of the salon and the manicurist and booked an appointment right away.

I headed over to see Sarah at Dep Nails in North Olmsted (440-979-1008). They are in the newer plaza along Brookpark right by Target. I was excited to see if this Shellac was going to be the polish of my dreams.  It was! For under $30 (including manicure) my nails were indestructable.

Day 1
Day 7
Day 14
I am beyond excited. I use my nails for everything. Opening things, picking things up, washing, scrubbing, peeling labels off, cooking and cleaning - they withstood anything I got myself into. Even my husband noticed, saying it seemed I was always painting my nails before. Well, I was! (every few days)

So I happily went back to see Sarah. She is my manicure dream! I adore her.
I soaked my nails for about 5-10 mins and the polish slid right off. It was so weird to see! My nails were perfectly healthy underneath, with no discoloration or dryness. They were strong and long. She gave me another Shellac mani and this time I chose a brighter pink.

Hot Pop Pink - Day 1
Day 7
Day 14
I still can't believe my eyes! 2 weeks of polish! This would easily last 3-4 weeks but I'm super picky about my cuticles and get a little board after 2 weeks with the same color. (Did I mention they dry immediately? So feel free to put gloves on, grab your keys, or fish out your credit card.) My nails were ridiculously long underneath, so this would be great if you have trouble growing them out. I like mine shorter so a major filing was in store. This time I decided to switch brands and try the Gelish by Nail Harmony. Same process. Every coat gets cured for a minute or two under a UV light.

I haven't tried OPI's Axiuum. Even though they have some really great colors, I haven't heard any great reviews on it.

Fresh Fork WK 6-7 & The Lola Burger

Last week we enjoyed our version of Michael Symon's Lola burger. This is hands-down one of my faves at The Q, B Spot or Lolita.

I swapped out the english muffin for a fresh, hand-knotted roll and cheated on the spicy ketchup. I didn't have enough time to make it, but I found this amazing substitute at Heinen's.

It has the perfect balance of sweet and spicy with just enough kick to be exciting, yet not overpowering. Yum!

I had mine without the bun, since I'm not the most graceful burger eater. I usually end up with half of it on myself or the plate and eating it with a fork anyway. These were delicious and got me thinking what else I can top with a fried egg?

Fresh Fork Week 6

1 bulb candy onion
1 head German white porcelain garlic
1 lb green beans
1 bunch green onions
2 ct zucchini
2 ct squash
Approx 2 lbs sweet cherries
1 pint black raspberries
Approx 1.5 lbs tomatoes
1 lb garlic chive linguine
1 cucumber

I've never had a candy bulb onion before. I halved it, tossed it with olive oil and salt and pepper and grilled it. Unbelievably sweet and crunchy. I'm a huge green bean fan. The husband is not. These were the most tender, delicious beans I've has in a long, long time. I blanched them, put them in ziploc bags in the fridge and took them to work to snack on. They were the perfect mid-day crunchy snack I needed (when everyone else was eating chips).

1 lb dragon's tongue green beans
1 bunch cilantro
2 ct zucchini
2 ct squash
1 whole pasture raised chicken
1 head leaf lettuce
1 pint blueberries
Approx 1.5 lbs cling peaches
Approx 1.5 lbs slicing tomatoes

I am beyond thrilled to have dragon's tongue beans! I've only seen them in magazines. Too bad they lose their purple spots when cooked.

This week I added broccoli, organic Costa Rican coffee and 1 lb of Luna farmhouse chili veggie burgers to my order. ($11) Luna burgers can be found at many local restaurants. They are quite large if you're used to the Boca and Gardenburger brands. They use all Ohio ingredients and are sold at Constantino's, the Nature Bin in Lakewood and Whole Foods on Cedar.
